Today is our second son's, David, birthday. It has been so long ago that he was with us. No, I can't say that because there have been several times over the years that I have felt him and I know that he still lives. Times when we have the whole family together, I feel him with us. He was with my Dad at his passing and the strongest time was in the temple as Mark received his endowments. He would have been thirty three today. I guess I will never stopped wondering what our lives would be like or his if he would have stayed here on earth. I know that he will have this earth life again and I eagerly look forward to that day when I pray I'm allowed to finish raising him.
Over the past month I have been working on his journal. I decided that for my ten hour project for Personal Progress in Faith I would retype his journal and then add all the pictures we have of him into the document. By doing this David's family will get a chance to learn about him and share in his short life. Les can only remember a very little about him, mostly about the day of the accident. I chose this for faith hoping that some day if some one else goes through this heartache maybe it will give them hope and peace. I did this for the rest of the kids a couple of years ago with only a select few pictures. I had forgotten a lot about my second son. Things that I promised myself that I would never forget. Even just going through the pictures, memories have flooded my mind and I'm looking forward to spending this day in celebrating his life. I know I have said this before but oh, how grateful I am for the journals that I kept. Memories are so hard to hold onto. They are like water that easily slips through our fingers. We must contain them and the only way to do that is to record them.
As I have done family history and gone over the family group sheets of my ancestors I have seen how many children died and I have often wondered how that impacted their lives. These are life changing events. Events that will either make or break you. Events that will draw us closer to our Father, to all our children really belong to, or we pull away blaming Him. I pray that no one else will feel the sting of losing a child but I also know that there isn't a greater feeling in the world knowing that one of your children is so perfect that they didn't need to endure this earth life and they have already earned their exaltation. Because of this knowledge it gives me greater encouragement to be better, to grow stronger, and to live my life better. I love you David and I miss you.
In the pictures, the top one is the last one taken of David, two weeks before his death. The middle one is of Les, Nicholas, and David the first of September. We were getting ready to move into our new home. The last is of David close to his first and only birthday.
